The theories of interpretation of History and Prophecy

Abstract

The importance of History does not remains on the fact of “what” must be studied, but in “how” it must be done. In order to reach this purpose, some principles of interpretation of the historical facts were elaborated. One of these is the principle of “Causality” that maintains the idea that every historical event is sujected to a cause. Inside this principle there are two theories of historical interpretation: the “cyclic” and the “linear”. The “linear” theory itself has two branches: the first defends the idea that every event follow the goal of liberty. The second sugests that all events are the result of social fights. Another principle is the “Determinism” which maintains that, as in Nature, every phenomenon is determined by a natural law. A. Toynbee affirms that History is determined according to a divine plan. Hence, the natural conclusion is this “Determinism” is manifested in biblical prophecies. It is in this aspect that History relates itself to Prophecy.
