Abstract

The concept of truth has been challenged in contemporary cultures to the point that the notion of a body of absolute truths, capable of being known through human investigation, requires defense. From a biblical perspective, truth is revealed by God and made accessible to human beings through the illumination of the Spirit, which leads to a progressive experience of knowledge and practice. Unlike Greek culture, the sacred Scriptures of the Judeo-Christian tradition reveal an understanding of truth that is connected with God’s revelation and faithfulness. This divinely revealed truth finds its greatest expression and embodiment in Christ, who claims to be the very truth. Known and experienced, the truth of Christ produces freedom and renewal of life. However, the explanation of truth given by one generation may become mere human tradition for later generations, thereby losing its restorative power. From this perspective, an experience of individual, progressive, and contextualized growth is revealed as a condition for remaining in the truth.
