Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to establish the theoretical foundation of the Seventh-day Adventist Bible-study series and to restore the history of the main series published in Portuguese by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil from 1921 to 2001, as well as to provide a critical analysis of those series by means of comparison and contrast. This analysis considered the different emphases placed on the themes of conversion, doctrination, and lifestyle in 94 series, which were studied in the context of different historical periods in which they were produced. Related to this purpose, the study tried to identify the tendencies of each period and to present suggestions about the ideal theological focus that new series should have. Based on a brief exegesis of Matthew 28:19, 20, and on a contextual reading of the baptisms mentioned in the New Testament, this study considered also the conditions to be fulfilled prior to baptism.
