Beyond aesthetics: an essay on sacred music and meaning

Abstract

This essay proposes that the focus of the discussion about sacred music in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church should be “meaning in music”, and not “musical aesthetics” as it has frequently been. A brief historical perspective about music and meaning is offered to aid in contextualizing the topic. A change of posture is proposed, including detailed study of what has been written by several authors on music and meaning.
