Abstract

In Malachi 4:5 one reads: “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes” (NIV). Who is in fact “the prophet Elijah” referred to in this prophecy? What is his role? Would this Elijah be the same prophet mentined in the Book of Kings, or the prophecy would rather be speaking of a prophetic symbol? The goal of this research is to investigate this prophecy and, especially, to examine how the New Testament interprets it.
