The communication of faith in 2 Timothy 1: an analysis of the role of family and church in the transmission of religious identity

Abstract

This article analyzes the text of 2 Timothy 1 with a focus on the transmission of faith between generations, highlighting the role of the family and of the church in the formation of religious identity. Based on bibliographical research, the study demonstrates that Timothy’s faith was deeply influenced by his grandmother Lois, his mother Eunice and, later, by the church, especially through the discipleship of the apostle Paul, revealing a complementary and integrated process of spiritual education. The research also addresses contemporary challenges to the transmission of faith and argues that the family constitutes the primary setting for discipleship, while the church serves as essential support and as a community of belonging, both being expected to work cooperatively while respecting their distinct roles and responsibilities.
