Abstract

This article examines the reception history of the book of Daniel as a paradigmatic case for Christian hermeneutical reflection. It seeks to understand how different traditions and historical contexts have reconfigured, over time, the relationship between revelation, history, and eschatological hope. Methodologically, the study is bibliographical, analytical, historical-theological, and hermeneutical, drawing on a critical review of specialized scholarship and a comparative analysis of interpretive paradigms. Its theoretical framework brings into dialogue Grenz and Olson’s contextual understanding of theology, Congar’s notion of the dynamic continuity of tradition, Gadamer’s emphasis on the historicity of understanding, and Osborne’s defense of the text’s normativity. From a diachronic perspective, the article reconstructs the Jewish and Christian reception of Daniel from antiquity to the contemporary period. It argues that Daniel functions as an interpretive laboratory, since its reception history makes visible the tensions between confession and criticism, tradition and method, and historical situatedness and textual normativity. It concludes that the biblical text must retain regulative primacy.
