An Adventist Approach to the Bible as Literature: John 13:21-30 as a Methodological example

This article aims to contribute to the appreciation of literary studies of the Bible within the Seventh-day Adventist theological tradition, an area that remains underexplored in this context. Although the Bible is acknowledged as a literary masterpiece, the literary approach has often been met with caution among Adventists, influenced by historical mistrust of fiction and restrictive interpretations of Ellen G. White’s writings. This study argues that literary tools, when properly applied, can enrich biblical understanding without compromising the Adventist theological framework. The article reviews the origins of biblical literary studies, examines the Adventist relationship with literature, and proposes a practical application of the narrative method to John 13:21-30. The aim is to demonstrate that a literary reading of the Bible, consistent with the Adventist worldview, can broaden interpretative possibilities and strengthen theological studies.
