Abstract

John 1:18 presents a great and interesting challenge for the translator as well
as for the exegete. In two important translations of the Bible verse is translated
differently. In the ASV the term only begotten is reference to God, while in the KJV it refers to the Son. This is because of different manuscripts where we have, at least, two significant readings. One is supported by testimonies considered as most ancient and reliable, but it is inconsistent with the Johannine context; and the other is found beautifully in harmony with the literature of the fourth evangelist, but is sustained by dubious and latter manuscripts. In such a controversial situation which variant could be considered as superior and why?
