This article aims to carry out a comparative study between two of the main festivals/events held in the Ancient Near East of which there are historical and biblical records: the Akitu festival and Yom Kippur. The Akitu festival was one of the main festivities in Mesopotamia, beginning on the first day of the year and seeking to achieve various objectives, including religious and political. However, the Akitu festival stopped being celebrated for several centuries, while Yom Kippur continues to be celebrated or remembered by the Jewish religion today. Given this, the problem arises: What were the main characteristics of the Akitu festival? Are there similarities between the Akitu festival and the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur? This article will discuss these issues and argue that although there are some similarities between these two ancient festivals, in the end the principles and purposes that both festivals aimed to achieve were very different.
