Abstract

Pentecostalism intends to be a movement for the renewal of Christianity in the contemporary world. This renewal is attempted by (1) introducing popular music into the worship and (2) valuing mystical experiences, which occur in detriment of the objective knowledge of the truth revealed in Scripture. This study analyzes the roots of Pentecostal worship and its connections with both primitive worship and postmodernism, in order to test the Pentecostal claim of being a movement for renewing the Christian faith. Pentecostalism is rooted on primitive religion, and may be seen in parallel with postmodernism. Its similarity with primitive worship places it as a byproduct of the natural human piety. The connection between Pentecostalism, primitive worship, and postmodernism distances Pentecostal worship from both Scripture and Christian tradition. Besides, an emphasis on corporeal movements and an insistent stimulation of emotion, as well as the consequent minimization of reason, cause Pentecostalism to be far different from biblical worship, which is clearly pictured in Scripture as rational worship.
