Lk 1:67-79: the zechariah’s song from the perspective of the biblical-semitic rhetorical analysis

For many centuries, Zechariah’s Song (Lk 1:67-79), also known as Benedictus, has been read, sung, and prayed by Christians from different denominations. The text, which is full of Old Testament allusions and echoes, renders a tribute of thanksgiving to God for fulfilling His promises of the past, through the coming of the Messiah, whose forerunner is the son of the priest Zechariah, John the Baptist. This hymn, found in the Gospel of the Infancy of Luke (Lk 1:5-2:52), is a beautiful and rich Semitic poetry, with a Lucan accent. The Benedictus approaches some biblical-theological themes very precious to Christianity, such as the doctrine of the Holy Spirit (Pneumatology, v. 67), the doctrine of Christ (Christology, vv. 68ab, 76b, 78-79), the doctrine of salvation (Soteriology, vv. 68c-69, 71, 73b-75, 77), the theology of covenants (vv. 69, 70, 72-73), the concept of divine mercy (vv. 72a, 78a), and the mission of John the Baptist (vv. 76-77), and most importantly, the fulfillment of the divine faithfulness and promises made to His people in the Old Testament about the coming of the Messiah. This article intends to analyze all these aspects of the pericope – historical, linguistic, intertextual and theological – applying, for this, the Semitic Biblical Rhetorical Analysis Method. At the end, in the Final Considerations, practical applications, of pastoral nature, are made on the passage.
