Abstract

The subject of this research aims to analyze the expectation of the coming of the Messiah within the Jewish community. Two prominent groups of this period were portrayed: the Pharisees and the Essenes of Qumran, and the type of Messiah they expected. These groups bear different characteristics, but both share an expectation for the arrival of the promised Messiah. This hope is relied on the prophecies of the written oracles that were available to them. This article begins with an introduction, demonstrating through history the events of the Cyrus period until the beginning of the first century of the Common Era, establishing a hermeneutical association of the construction of the temple with the coming of the Branch, the Messiah priest and king who would build the temple. The main theme was divided into two sections: a description of the idiosyncrasy of the Pharisees and the characteristics of the Essenes, and a second section with the possible prophecies that are identified as expectations of the coming of the promised Messiah. This work describes excerpts from the writings of the communities in question, such as the Talmud for the Pharisees and the Qumran manuscripts for the Essenes. It is also possible to observe the prophecies concerning in Jewish scriptures and its interpretations of historians and theologians regarding their relations with the period in which they were written, identified the expectation present at the time analyzed.
