Abstract

This research aims to reflect on the reality of teaching/learning grammar classes in elementary, secondary and higher education institutions in the cities of Serra Talhada – PE and Santa Cruz da Baixa Verde – PE, analyzing why there are bad results in the teaching traditional grammar, observing if this factor happens due to teaching focused only on the use of rules. In order to analyze grammar classes and obtain the expected results, a questionnaire was applied to students and teachers of elementary and high schools and private network, as well as to students and teachers of the Licentiate in Modern Languages course. After completing the questionnaires with the target audience, all responses were analyzed and based on grammar teaching theories. Among the authors analyzed, we can mention: Irandé Antunes, Travaglia and Bagno. Based on the study carried out, the aspect pointed out and discussed, it can be said that the teaching of grammar still presents itself as a great challenge, even if such professionals have adequate training to do so. It was observed that students have some difficulty with normative grammar. Some even manage to identify the rules and their functions, but they cannot apply them in everyday life and in text productions efficiently and effectively.
