The Existence of Intrinsic Meaning in Tonal Music: a Help to the Adequate Choice of Music for the Worship in the SDA

Abstract

The subject of the choice of a correct music to use in the SDA church in Brazil has been a theme of concern for the musicians and the administrators of the Church. Usually the groups are polarized in two basic positions: those who believe that the music doesn't have any intrinsic meaning in itself and, consequently, cannot be morally evaluated; and those who believe that morally measurable meaning can be found in music and that, consequently, there would be characteristics essentially sacred or secular that shouldn’t be mixed. This paper aims to show the existence of intrinsic meaning in music and how the conscience of this can improve the worship in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Brazil.
