Abstract

The Goal of the present study was to investigate how the contemporary media interferes with the devotional life of the Adventists Christians in Brazil. The theme was dealt with in five chapters, being that the first one contains an introduction to the subject. Chapter Two described the major devotional guidelines for a personal communion with God–meditation, proper administration of time, prayer, study of the Bible and of the writings of the Spirit of Prophecy. Chapter Three overviewed the beginnings of different types of media, specially the Press, the Radio, the Television, and the Internet. It also approached their positive and negative aspects, their influence in the human mind, and, therefore, their influence upon moral values and the devotional life. Chapter Four presented the data collected in a field research, and it presents a preliminary analysis of this data. Chapter Five concluded with some recommendations and suggestions on the issue of the devotional life and the use of media on the basis of the results of the research presented in Chapter Four. The study demonstrated that people who spend much of their time with a specific media have a tendency to be unhappy with a devotional life. On the other side, people who dedicate more time for the study of the Bible and prayer, and who also participate in missionary activities, have a greater satisfaction with a devotional life. The study points, thereby, to the need of implementing a change of paradigm concerning the usage of media by a Christian, and makes suggestions on how to utilize it with more criteria, so that the communion with God becomes a priority.
