“Eat the Tithe”: An Exegetical Study of Deuteronomy 14:23

Abstract

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has maintained that, according to the
Bible, the tithe can only be used for the financial sustenance of those who dedicate themselves exclusively to the ministry of the Gospel. Nevertheless, the text of Deuteronomy 14:23 seems to indicate other alternatives to the usage of the tithe. This passage has being used to proof that the tithe can be used in the personal benefit of giver himself. Would this be the appropriate interpretation of the passage in focus? Is there an explanation to the seemingly contradiction of Deut. 14:23? The objective of this study is search for a proper understanding of the order given in Deut. 14:23 in a quest for answers to these questions.
