Religiosity, Spirituality and Cardiovascular Diseases: What do Research Show?

Abstract

The relationship between religiosity, spirituality and health has increased in recent years, especially when it comes to the prevention of chronic diseases. Cardiovascular diseases are among the main causes of mortality worldwide and also in Brazil. This article aims to review and discuss what has been discussed in the last five years regarding the role of religiosity/spirituality in patients with cardiovascular diseases. A Pubmed search was performed for articles published in the last five years with the terms [“cardiovascular diseases” and “religiosity or spirituality”] in January 2022. 41 articles were found, with seven remaining after refinement. The studies evaluated were unanimous in reporting their limitations, as well as the need for more research involving the subject of religiosity/spirituality and cardiovascular diseases.
