Abstract

The baptismal rite is considered the ceremony that inserts the proselyte to
the christian community. In this environment, there are polemics about its
origin, means and nature. Thus, this article seeks to analyse the hebrew
origins of the rite and how this comprehension unfolded as the biblical canon was
formed and also among the jews in the begginning of the first century of the Christian era. Finally, the biblical teachings will be compared to what has been practiced by the christian denominations concerning to the means and nature of baptism.
