Abstract
Sedentary behavior (SB) has emerged as an important health risk factor, particularly affecting the elderly population. Physical activity and the prevention of SB are essential for healthy aging, offering benefits in reducing disability and mortality. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sedentary behavior among elderly individuals attending an outpatient service and to identify its associated factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed sociodemographic, occupational, behavioral, and health-related variables. Descriptive analyses were conducted to present the absolute and relative frequencies of categorical variables. Bivariate analyses were performed using the Pearson chi-square test, and Poisson regression with robust variance was used to estimate prevalence ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 138 elderly participants were included, of whom 76.8% were women. The prevalence of high SB was 71.0%. Most participants had low educational attainment and low family income. Additionally, 35.5% screened positive for depression. High SB was observed in 62.3% of those who engaged in physical activity and in 75.0% of overweight elderly participants. No significant associations were found between SB and sociodemographic or behavioral variables. Conclusion: The high prevalence of sedentary behavior and its potential health implications highlight the need for strategies to reduce SB and promote physical activity among the elderly population.
