Abstract
Introduction: Prenatal care is essential for guidance and the early detection of complications and should ensure that pregnant women have access to information about their rights and the freedom to seek clarification. Such care contributes to preventing the dehumanization of care and the occurrence of obstetric violence (OV), which is perpetrated by health professionals through actions that embarrass, humiliate or undermine women’s autonomy during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium. As OV is often institutionalized, many women do not recognize themselves as victims.
Objective: To analyze parturients’ perceptions of the role of prenatal care in preventing obstetric violence.
Methodology: Exploratory-descriptive qualitative study conducted with postpartum women aged over 18 years admitted to the ward of the Normal Birth Center (Centro de Parto Normal) of Hospital Luiz Argolo, Santo Antônio de Jesus, Bahia, Brazil. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews, comprising closed questions on sociodemographic profile and open questions about prenatal experience, and were analyzed using Bardin’s Content Analysis technique.
Results and discussion: The analysis revealed a lack of information about OV during prenatal care, highlighting the need for education and empowerment of pregnant women and demonstrating the fragility of health education in this context.
Conclusions: The persistent lack of information on OV in prenatal consultations reinforces the importance of prenatal care as a space for guidance, contributing to the prevention and reduction of obstetric violence.
